The Old Man From Mississippi

    At 59 years of age, most would say I am a bit 'long in the tooth' to be starting a career in music. And if you too are thinking that as you browse the pages of this website, I can't say that I blame you.  However, ask yourself this; who is more qualified to write lyrics, someone with 20 years of life experience, or someone with 50?

    What I really want, is not to perform onstage, but to leave a legacy of music, songs that were drawn from my life story of my life. My songs are all based on life experiences. For instance, 'Sweet Mountain Band' is the story of  the Calton Family Bluegrass Band. TCFBB performed for many years at Silver Dollar City, a theme park in the Missouri Ozarks.  The band consisted of Charles  & Inez Calton, a beautiful couple with 3 incredibly beautiful girls - Brenda, Randie, and Annette, who were near my age. Their music formed the beginning of a serious interest in Bluegrass for me.

    My music is a montage of all the events in my life and how I interpreted those events.  I invite you into my life story to become a part of it, by listening to the emotion in my works, and becoming a fan of my music.

    My deepest loves are starry nights, summer rain on a dusty road, the early morning dew, the gentle lowing of cattle headed for the barn in the early dusk.

    The roots of my music go deep. To Ireland, England, Germany and France.  Even the Swiss played a part in the development of my Family Tree, passing on their genetic talents.

 

    I owe a debt of thanks to God who granted me the talent, time, and opportunity.  My beautiful parents for their love and support, for buying me my first real guitar. To my sister for learning to play and sing with me, to my Grandpa WJ Townsend for inspiring me with his clawhammer banjo style.  Grandma Ruth for being proud of me. Cousin Lecil for all the time we picked together. And a host of other Friends too numerous to mention, but here are a few: John Wynn, Berry Wynn, Richard & John Hackett, and many, many others.
